We’re still not afraid of Roo

“I can assure you that when my players get the ball, they will not be thinking of the great [Frank] Lampard, the great [Steven] Gerrard or the great [David] Beckham, they are trying to get in front and do something nice with the ball. We’ll try and win the game, you cannot prepare a team to draw or lose a match. The players showed versus Sweden that they had no complexes in their head. They were just playing to go for it and do the best they could. We will do the same tomorrow.”

Great Warrior Chief has spoken.

Heya

It’s half time and the warriors are performing brilliantly.

A few times the English have attacked on the blindside but so far Shake is more than up to the task.

Best chance of the game was ours and only a desperation acrobatic kick stopped it crossing the line.

We playing, we fighing and we holding our own. Only another 45 to go and we ALREADY proved everyone that Sweden was not juck luck.

Let’s just hope that we can keep the defence tight and making those teling counterattacks that have produced more than a few heart tremors in the England camp.

And as for Roo … he’s just another player in a white shirt.

GO SOCA WARRIORS, GO GO GOOOOOOO

So there it was, you could smell it in the air, the goals were primed and ready; they just hadn’t found their man. But this is still not the England we were promised, not the England that can face down a side even marginally stronger than lowly Trinidad & Tobago. For this world cup “favorite” to play so desperately against a team that normally could barely keep its head above the Atlantic says little about England’s quality, and plenty about its doubtful future. Rooney all you want: the team as a whole, these last few minutes aside, is playing as if on crutches. Maybe this’ll give them reason to live up to their promise. I don’t think they will.

Hope is still alive! If Soca Warriors can beat Paraguay and England beat Sweden, T&T go through. Even if Sweden and England tie, T&T could go through on goal diferential.

By the way, Austin Kelley’s Newsletter has a great bit on Shaka Hislops efforts on the pitch and with his pen. Includes drawings by a New Yorker cartoonist:
