We Really Reach
As previously reported on this blog, the people of Rotenburg – where the Warriors will be staying throughout the tournament – have gone all out to ensure that the T&T players feel right at home.
When the Warriors’ bus pulled into town on Sunday, they were greeted by thousands of flag-waving, face-painted fans – and ushered to the town square, which had been converted into a mini-tropical paradise, complete with sand, palm trees and a steelband.
The Warriors are riding the crest of an enormous wave of support from around the world, and it is immensely gratifying. The level of interest in the Warriors is incredible. Press conferences, documentaries, a constant stream of news reports – even for someone as obsessive-compulsive (and RSS addicted) as I am, it’s hard to keep up.
Which is why I found Russell Latapy’s comment upon arrival so interesting. Said the Little Magician: “It’s great to have this kind of support. But it’s time to get ready to play.”
Thus spake our enormously talented Number 10, and rightly.
The whole world is talking about T&T – about our colourful culture, our passionate supporters, our Warrior Spirit. “T&T will bring a Carnival atmosphere to the games.” “Whatever happens in the England game, it will be fun to watch.”
To quote Maximus, this is the game of our life – and not necessarily the time of our lives. As much as our Soca Warriors are immensely proud and happy to have qualified, they’re in Germany to play football. And we’re going to be there – in person or in spirit – to support them. We’re taking this very, very seriously – there might be bright smiles on our faces and music in our steps, but we’re not just here for the party.
It’s time to play.

[...] Quite right. The patronising, oh-look-at-the-little-islanders coverage has given way to a grudging concession that the Warriors didn’t come to Germany to party (even if the supporters have). The Warriors came to play. [...]
