This week: Dwight Yorke ‘to stay’ at Sydney FC; 24 is a magic number; Spann ready to explode

Dwight Yorke - living the dreamThis week the press has been all over the story that Dwight Yorke will be staying on at Sydney FC - as this blog reported last month. Yorke is currently in Manchester training with Manchester United - and, according to Sydney FC chief executive Tim Parker, “freezing his nuts off in the rain and snow.”
Interesting caveat to this whole Yorke-Syndey affair, however: Parker admits that “if Dwight was to star at the World Cup ” and attracted “valuable” offers as a result of his performance, Sydney would be more than willing to review his contract. “The economics say you would simply be daft from a business perspective not to look at a serious offer.” [Quotes from Television New Zealand Online]

Following in Mexico’s footsteps, Beenie this week named his provisional World Cup squad. And like his CONCACAF counterpart (who named 26 players), Beenhakker chose to name one man extra. The pyschological pressure created by this tactic seems to be working wonders for the Warriors. This week, Scott Sealy scored for the Kansas City Wizards, Cornell Glenn took his new team to victory, notching a double for LA Galaxy and Stern John helped ensure Coventry’s victory over Luton with his goal.

Silvio SpannSilvio Spann is feeling the pressure. In an interview this weekend with Shaun Fuentes, the TTFF Media Officer, Spann said that he felt like “a volcano waiting to erupt” as he counted down the days to the World Cup. The midfielder, who is one of Beenie’s 24, echoed Dwight Yorke, saying “our chances are as good as any other of the teams’.”
