In brief this week: A Spann in the works; Jason Scotland saves St. Johnstone; Kelvin Jack under pressure

Silvio Spann
- Silvio Spann, the T&T midfielder, hasn’t been having an easy time lately. He was injured whilst trying out for Sheffield. Now he’s almost match fit again, and is hoping to be signed to an English club soon. The 24-year old has previously appeared for Italian clubs Perugia and San Benedettesse Calcio, Croatia’s Dinamo Zagreb and the Japanese Yokohama FC.

Jason Scotland in his Dundee United days

- At least one ‘Scot’ won’t be cheering for England this summer. St. Johnstone FC hammered Stanraer 3-2 - with all three goals scored by T&T striker Jason Scotland. Scotland’s previous club, Dundee United, must be rueing their loss. United had attempted to extend the player’s contract for an additional two years, but were unable to after the UK Home Office turned down Scotland’s application for a work permit. Why? They ruled that Scotland wouldn’t be ‘making a significant contribution’ to the Scottish Premier League. St. Johnstone, a First Divison club, were however able to acquire a permit for the player. The uneasy relationship between football and politics continues.

- This blog has been tough on T&T goalie Kelvin Jack in the past. This week, Gretna FC were tough on Dundee United, Jack’s current club. Gretna destroyed Dundee 3-0 in the Scottish Cup semi-final. Jack did his utmost, and made several brilliant saves, but was unable to stave off the Gretna onslaught. Jack’s contract with Dundee is up this July. His World Cup performance - assuming, of course, that he’s picked - may well determine where he’ll be in August.
