Warriors to Watch – Whitely, Jones and Birchall

May 19th, 2006 | By: Stacy-Marie Ishmael | No Comments »

Chris Birchall is just slightly too old (at 22) to qualify for the World Cup’s Best Young Player award. So is Kenwyne Jones, 21. Aurtis Whitely is definitely over the hill at the ripe old age of 30. No matter – these young (and young-at-heart) Warriors, are ones to watch anyway.

Tony Hibbert, a defender for Everton FC, thinks that Chris Birchall is going to be the player who makes the biggest impact this June. I’m a huge fan of “Me mum”, and I’d love to see him score some goals – especially against England!

Kenwyne Jones changed the pace of our recent 1-1 friendly against Peru, scoring the only goal for the T&T team off of a stunning free kick. He’s fast, confident and an intelligent player.

Aurtis Whitely Aurtis Whitely is extraordinary in midfield, and probably the fittest player on the squad. Terry Fenwick, former Portsmouth manger who now coaches in Trinidad, has compared Whitley to English superstars Bryan Robson, Glenn Hoddle, Gazza, saying that Whitley “has got every bit of skill they ever had.” Fenwick also thinks that if Whitley shines at the World Cup, “he would get a zillion phone calls the next week from Europe, with clubs wanting to sign him.”

There’s a lot of of talent in the T&T team. Who are your Warriors To Watch? Let me know in the comments.
